Get ready for an exciting, full-day adventure as we embark on the best 1-day hike to Humantay Lagoon, one of the most breathtaking treks in the Peruvian Andes. This journey offers unparalleled views of Humantay Peak and the majestic Salkantay Glacier peaks, making it an unforgettable experience for nature lovers and adventurers alike.
Your day begins early with a prompt 4 a.m. pick-up from your hotel in Cusco. From here, we’ll drive for approximately 2 hours through the scenic Andean countryside to Mollepata, a quaint local village where we’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast to fuel us for the adventure ahead.
After breakfast, we continue our journey with a 1-hour drive along a rugged dirt road, leading us to Soraypampa, situated at an elevation of 3,850 meters. At this high altitude, the air can be chilly, so it’s important to dress warmly. Bring layers, gloves, and a hat to stay comfortable. The weather is typically sunny from May to October, but the temperatures can drop in the early morning, so don’t forget your sunhat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the strong Andean sun.
Once we arrive at Soraypampa and take in the breathtaking views, we begin our trek toward Humantay Lagoon. The hike starts with a gradual ascent through diverse landscapes, offering plenty of opportunities to take in the surrounding beauty. As we approach the final stretch of the hike, the trail becomes steeper, but the anticipation of reaching the lake will keep you motivated.
After about 2 hours of hiking, we reach Humantay Lagoon, a glacial lake nestled at the base of Humantay Peak. The scenery here is absolutely mesmerizing—turquoise waters surrounded by towering snow-capped mountains and glaciers, including the stunning Salkantay Glacier, one of the most impressive glacial formations in the region.
At this point, take time to soak in the incredible views and the peacefulness of this remote spot. The Humantay Lagoon is the perfect place to relax, take photos, and enjoy the stunning landscape that surrounds you. Whether you want to sit and reflect or simply take in the natural beauty, this moment will be a highlight of your journey.
Once we’ve fully enjoyed the beauty of the lake, we’ll retrace our steps back to Soraypampa, which takes about 1.5 hours. The descent is easier, giving you the chance to appreciate the stunning views from a different angle.
Upon returning to Soraypampa, we’ll board our transport for the drive back to Mollepata, where a delicious lunch awaits. Afterward, we continue our journey back to Cusco, with an expected arrival time around 6 p.m.
