Day 1: Cusco – Soraypampa – Salkantay Pass – Soraypampa
Your journey into the heart of the Andes begins early, with a 4:20 am hotel pickup in Cusco. As we leave the city behind, the road winds through picturesque valleys and sleepy highland villages, offering dramatic sunrise views over the mountains. After approximately 3 hours, we arrive at Soraypampa (3,900 m / 12,795 ft), our trailhead nestled beneath towering glacial peaks.
Here, you’ll be welcomed by your trekking chef with a hearty, freshly prepared breakfast, just what you need before heading into the heights. After a safety briefing and time to adjust your gear, we begin our hike with a steady 3-hour ascent to Salkantaypampa, a vast alpine meadow where wild horses graze and the views stretch endlessly across the Vilcabamba Range.
Following a short break, we continue upward along ancient Inca paths for another 2 hours, reaching the mighty Salkantay Pass (4,650 m / 15,255 ft), the highest point of your trek. This is a moment of true triumph. From here, the views of the snow-draped Apu Salkantay, revered by the Incas as a sacred protector, are simply awe-inspiring. You’ll have time to breathe in the thin, crisp air, take memorable photos, and connect with the powerful spirit of the Andes.
After soaking in the moment, we begin our descent back down the same trail, a much easier return thanks to gravity and the reward of a hot lunch prepared by our cook waiting at Salkantaypampa. Refueled and rested, we descend a bit further to return to Soraypampa, where we set up our first night’s campsite.
As the sun sets behind the mountains, enjoy a peaceful evening in nature, with towering glaciers overhead and the sound of the wind through the high passes, a perfect end to your first day on the trail.
Day 2: Soraypampa – Humantay Lake – Soraypampa – Cusco
Your final morning on the trail begins with a warm cup of coca tea delivered to your tent, followed by a nourishing Andean breakfast prepared by our trekking chef. As the first rays of sunlight touch the surrounding peaks, we pack up and set out for one last adventure: the hike to the stunning Humantay Lake (4,200 m / 13,780 ft).
The trail ascends gradually for about 1.5 hours, taking us through an awe-inspiring landscape of rugged cliffs, high-altitude meadows, and glacier-fed streams. Along the way, the crisp mountain air and colorful native flora create the perfect setting for quiet reflection and connection with nature.
At the top, you’re greeted by the breathtaking turquoise waters of Humantay Lake, nestled beneath the towering snow-capped peaks of Mount Humantay and the mighty Salkantay. Revered by the Incas as a sacred place, the lake is not only visually spectacular but also deeply spiritual. Spend time soaking in the view, capturing photos, or simply sitting in silence, letting the beauty of the Andes leave its mark on your soul.
We then descend gently back to Soraypampa, where a special farewell lunch awaits, complete with local flavors and heartfelt gratitude from our trekking team. This is a perfect moment to celebrate the journey, share stories, and perhaps express thanks with a tip if you feel inclined.
After lunch, we board our private vehicle for the scenic 3.5-hour drive back to Cusco. You'll arrive at your hotel around 5:00 pm, with tired legs, a full heart, and unforgettable memories from an adventure that brought you face-to-face with the spirit of the Andes.
