The adventure begins early with a pick-up from your hotel in Cusco at 4:30 AM. We will start our 1.5-hour journey to Ollantaytambo train station, where a delicious breakfast awaits. After enjoying the meal, we’ll board the Vistadome train at 7:05 AM. The scenic train ride lasts about 1 hour and 20 minutes, bringing us to kilometer 104, the start of the short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.
Upon arrival at the checkpoint, you’ll need to present your original passport and can receive a stamp if desired. Once your paperwork is complete, we’ll begin the hike. The trail starts with a gentle incline, and our first stop is the Chacabamba Inca site, located at the trail’s beginning. Your expert guide will lead a fascinating tour of this historical site.
The trail then continues with a gradual uphill climb, lasting approximately 3.5 hours. Along the way, you’ll have opportunities to pause for snacks, admire the stunning views, and capture memorable photos. The landscape evolves into a cloud forest, home to vibrant flowers, particularly orchids, and buzzing hummingbirds.
Our next major stop is the breathtaking Inca site of Wiñayhuayna, often referred to as a “miniature Machu Picchu.” Here, you’ll enjoy a guided tour and have time to fully appreciate the site’s unique beauty. Afterward, a gourmet lunch will be served, freshly prepared by our expert trekking chef.
Following lunch, a one-hour walk will lead us to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), a special vantage point exclusive to Inca Trail hikers. We typically reach the Sun Gate by 2:00 PM, offering you the perfect opportunity to enjoy the afternoon views of Machu Picchu and, if you’re lucky, catch a magnificent sunset. From the Sun Gate, a gentle one-hour downhill hike will take us to the entrance of the Machu Picchu citadel.
This segment leads directly to the upper part of Machu Picchu, providing the best panoramic views of the entire citadel. You’ll have plenty of time to take in the spectacular scenery, snap photos, and create unforgettable memories. Afterward, we’ll board a bus to Aguas Calientes, where you’ll spend the night.
